Hebrew (ְבִרִית, rom .:'ivrit, pron: [ʁivʁit] or [ɾivɾit]) is a Semitic language of the Afro-Asian family spoken, written and read by more than six million people in Israel and by communities Jews from the Diaspora, comprising more than 80 countries.
The traditional source of reference for the Hebrews is the Bible, whose content is also found in the Hebrew scriptures of the Torah. According to these sources the Hebrews constitute the initial monotheistic group, which is descended from the post-Flood patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
According to the Bible and Hebrew traditions (oral and written), the Hebrews originated from Mesopotamia. They were nomads, they lived in tents, they had herds of goats and sheep, using donkeys, mules and camels as bearers. Following Abraham, the Hebrews emigrated to Canaan, the land promised by God to the descendants of the first patriarch. Several tablets discovered in Mari certify frequent migrations through the Fertile Crescent.

The Hebrew alphabet or alphabet, sometimes called by its Hebrew form ále-bet2 (אֶףלֶף-בֵּית), is the series formed by the Hebrew consonants.
