The Sebastian Melrose team was formed in 2014 to provide support for the racing star of the future, Sebastian Melrose, the god son of 3 time Indy 500 winner and 4 time IndyCar champion, Dario Franchitti. Born in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland in 1998, Seb has grown up around successful racing drivers such as Dario, Marino Franchitti, Allan McNish and Paul Di Resta. Having never done karting, Seb only started his career in 2014 racing for GBR (Graham Brunton Racing Team).
September 2007, Sebastian got his first taste of motorsport, when he went to watch his godfather, Dario Franchitti, at Chicagoland Speedway, win the 2007 Indycar Championship. Since then, Seb’s enthusiasm for motorsport has grown and grown.
June 2013, Seb’s grandfather, Stewart Melrose Snr. took him to the 24hr Le Mans, where he spent the weekend with Aston Martin Racing Team. At the time, Seb’s chosen career was Mechanical Engineering, so learning about how the Race Team engineered their race cars interested him just as much as the racing. His grandfather mentioned how “Seb complained that he wanted to stay up later and continue watching the race when I wanted to go to bed…Bearing in mind this was at 2am.” He was also surprised how Seb, throughout the day, would stay to watch race for hours upon hours with the same enthusiasm he had in the opening minutes of the race.
October 2014, Seb entered his first away race at Brands Hatch for the Formula Ford Festival which supported over 100 entrants. Seb managed to make the final of the Festival and managed to get a top 20/25. With it only being his first season ever in racing and for only being aged 16 at the time, he was one of the youngest to have ever achieved this.
May 24th 2015, Seb went to the Indianapolis 500 for the first time. With thanks to his dad and godfather, Seb got to see his dream which is to get to the Indycar series and race in the 500. As part of the Chip Ganassi Racing Team, he got an insight to what drivers lives are like during race weekend and got shown around the cars in detail by Dario, as well as meeting Chip Ganassi and Roger Penske. He says “It was one of the best weekends of my life. Thanks to everyone who made it an experience which I won’t forget. Now I have to really focus and maybe one day I’ll be racing in Indycar.”
Seb already has the support from the Melrose family and is helping to promote the family business. Now he is looking for other early bird sponsors to invest in him and share his future success.
This year Seb will be racing in the Formula Ford 1600 Scottish Championship with the Graham Brunton Racing Team (GBR) for the second season in racing.
